User Manual: Backing up your data

You can create the TaskList.xml file manually by exporting the tasks to an XML file. This is the file that you need to copy to your PC in case you need to restore it latter.

To backup your tasks press the menu button on the task list view screen and select the “Import / Export Menu” option. Next select the “Save Task List to SD Card” option to open the Save Task List to Card screen. Select the All Tasks and XML settings and click the Save button.

To turn on the auto backup press the menu button on the task list view screen and select settings, then click “Backup Options”. Put a check mark next to the “Automatic Backup” option. I also recommend putting a check mark next to the “Include date in filename” so that it creates a new backup each time. Click the Backup Interval Settings option and set it to backup every week.

Restoring your data

If you backed up your tasks to an xml file you can import them back into the application. The default backup file name is TaskList.xml. Some files may have a date in front of the file name like 20121231.TaskList.xml if you used the automatic backup.

To import the TaskList.xml file press the menu button on the task list view screen and select the “Import / Export Menu” option. Next select the “Import Task List From Card” option to open the import Task List from Card screen. Select the appropriate settings and click the Import button.

The most likely problem when importing a xml file is that the directory is wrong. Some devices have both internal and external memory that shows up as SD cards. The second most common problem is that the file name is wrong. On some devices the SD card is not recognized when it is connected to a PC.

Transferring tasks to a new devices

On your new device first create a single task and then export it to an XML file so you will know which directory the TaskList.xml file should be in.

Connect your old device to a PC. Copy the XML file containing your tasks to the PC. Rename the XML file to TaskList.xml if it has a date in front of the name like 20131231.TaskList.xml.

Connect your new device to the PC. Replace the TaskList.xml file on the new device with the TaskList.xml file on the PC. Disconnect the device from the PC. Open the Task Manager application and import the tasks.

I have a free add-on available that allows ToDo Task Manager -Pro to sync with the web site Toodledo.com. I use this add-on to sync between my tablet and my phone. This can be used as an alternative way to transfer tasks over to a new device.

Setting the default directory

On either the import or export settings screen press the menu button and select “Change Default Storage Path” from the pop-up menu. This will display the path that the TaskList.xml file is being saved in. The default directory is usually \mnt\sdcard.

On some devices the directory \mnt\sdcard point to the internal storage (flash memory) and the SD card directory varies from manufacture.

Some commonly used paths to the SD card:

  • /mnt/sdcard-ext – Motorola
  • /mnt/extSdCard – Samsung
  • /mnt/sdcard/external_sd – Samsung
  • /sdcard/external_sd/
  • /mnt/sdcard/external_sdcard
  • /mnt/sdcard/ext_sd
  • /mnt/ext_card/
  • /mnt/storage/sdcard
  • /mnt/sdcard2/
  • /mnt/sdcard/Android/data/
  • /mnt/external1/
  • /Removable/SD/OMN/
